Australia creates nearly 5,000 km² Great Koala National Park in New South Wales

MONGABAY

After a 13-year community campaign, New South Wales in southeastern Australia announced the Great Koala National Park — nearly 5,000 km² of connected forests protecting 20% of the state’s wild koala population and 66 other threatened species. Volunteers are already planting eucalyptus corridors, and the park will create new jobs including roles for Indigenous Gumbaynggirr guides.
