Italy makes femicide a distinct crime with life sentences to curb gender violence

Italy’s parliament has formally added femicide — the deliberate killing of women because of their gender — to the criminal code, making offenders eligible for life imprisonment. The law recognises gender-based motives such as hatred or control and aims to strengthen justice for victims and protect women and girls from violence rooted in discrimination.
