Last year, scientists discovered more than 300 freshwater fish species

Rivers, lakes and wetlands across the planet are still revealing remarkable biodiversity. In 2025 alone, scientists formally described 309 previously unknown freshwater fish species—almost one every day. The discoveries span five continents, from African rivers to Asian caves, highlighting the extent of life yet to be documented in freshwater ecosystems.
