Hand-painted decoys are luring endangered seabirds back to lost habitats

BIOGRAPHIC

Sue Schubel paints around 500 bird decoys a year for a program led by the Audubon’s Seabird Institute that has benefited a third of all seabird species worldwide since 1973 . Decoys have restored Atlantic puffins to historical levels in the Gulf of Maine and helped revive Chinese crested terns, presumed extinct for over 60 years, with 40+ now nesting again.
