Nigeria overhauls wildlife law to target trafficking networks across three continents

THE COOLDOWN

Nigeria passed a sweeping new wildlife bill replacing outdated, contradictory laws with a single framework covering elephants, pangolins, sea turtles, and primates. Between 2012 and 2021, only 11 wildlife cases reached court and just 3 ended in convictions. The new law enables financial and phone record investigations to pursue trafficking network organizers, not just couriers.
