Lanchester Wines in Gateshead, northeast England, became the first private business in Britain to draw heat from disused underground coal mines. Two open-loop water source heat pumps with a combined 4-megawatt capacity now heat more than 33,000 square metres of warehouse space. Britain has around 23,000 flooded coal mines, a quarter of which sit beneath homes and businesses.
