Electric aircraft might soon be a reality on short-haul routes in Europe

European start-ups are developing electric and hybrid aircraft that could serve short routes by around 2030, including island and cross-water links where rail is not practical. Battery limits remain, but smaller aircraft may cut fuel use, local pollution and exposure to volatile jet fuel prices for passengers.
