Across Southern Africa, gene banks are cloning productive wild fruit trees such as Uapaca kirkiana, cutting the wait for fruit from about 17 years to four or five. The work preserves genetic diversity as miombo woodlands shrink and could help farmers grow indigenous orchards for local food and income.
