A five-year survey on Aldabra Atoll in Seychelles estimates almost 183,000 adult and sub-adult giant tortoises, the highest figure recorded for the species. Once below 1,000 and endangered after 19th-century exploitation, the population is now a conservation success story. The Aldabra Atoll is the only place in the world, apart from the Galápagos Islands, where the giant tortoises are found roaming free.
