A study of 28 atoll islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans found that rat-free islands with seabirds, native plants, and healthy reefs had twice the reef accretion potential of rat-infested ones. Restoration could help some sparsely populated atolls withstand sea-level rise, adding to the benefits of emissions cuts or engineering.
