Kites and googly-eyed eye buoys help keep seabirds out of fishing nets

Gillnets pose a major threat to diving birds because they forage underwater and can get tangled in the mesh. Scientists conducted a study off the coast of Cornwall, fitting gillnets with bird-of-prey kites and buoys with googly eyes, which reduced unwanted seabird bycatch, such as guillemots and razorbills, by 71% and 59%, respectively.
