Europe has removed a record number of dams to revive rivers

Europe removed a record 542 dams, weirs and culverts in 2024 as countries worked to reconnect rivers and restore wildlife habitats. The growing effort, led across 23 nations from Finland to Spain, is helping migratory fish return, improving water flow and opening thousands of kilometers of rivers again.
