Insect number in millions more than once believed, study finds

New research led by scientists at Cornell, Colorado, and Kentucky estimates Earth holds 14 to 30 million insect species, far above the earlier figure of six million. The team analyzed 1.6 million DNA-barcoded insects from Costa Rica’s Área de Conservación Guanacaste, a UNESCO site, showing most insect species still lack names.

The method replaces oxygen atoms with sulfur in the plastic's structure, weakening its molecular bonds.
