China’s installed solar capacity overtakes coal for first time

China’s installed solar capacity reached 1,286 gigawatts by the end of July 2026, passing coal for the first time, according to figures cited from the National Energy Administration. Coal still supplies much of China’s electricity, but its share fell below 50% in early 2026 as renewable generation rose about 9%.
