El Niño rains bring rare desert bloom across Chile’s Atacama

Exceptionally heavy El Niño rains have brought parts of Chile’s Atacama Desert into bloom, awakening dormant seeds from around 200 species. Chile’s forestry agency says up to 15,000 hectares may be covered in flowers by October, while noting rainfall levels in some areas have been unprecedented for the region.
