New Zealand opens first Māori co-managed marine reserves

After more than a decade of local planning, five no-take marine reserves are now in force off southeast New Zealand, the country’s first to be co-managed by Māori and the government. The areas cover 308 sq km and include shared decisions and a joint ranger team; a sixth reserve remains unresolved.
