Scotland has become the first part of the UK to legally mandate swift bricks — hollow-cavity bricks built into walls — in all new buildings, where reasonably practicable. The measure aims to help swifts and other cavity-nesting birds, whose populations have fallen by around two-thirds since the mid-1990s as modern construction has eliminated their nesting sites. At least one nest per dwelling is required.
